  2. 2007.04.30 Understanding the difference

One of the main lesson from the last class is the diversity of organizations participants. We all have to remind that it is crucial to understand and respect the difference between members to succeed in this globalized business environment.

Even when I was a high school student, Koreans and Korean society were very hierarchy and conservative. For example, one of my cousin who is older than I am by one year had an experience of hearing blames from an unknown old lady just because she rode a bicycle. We can not dream of and even cannot remember cases like this in Korean society now in 2007. At that time, it was a closed military government country so this could make sense at that time but now when the active interchange in the world became a precondition for growth, everyone of participants in society, in company and in any organization should have to accept voluntarily this change. Rome who opened its door and even accepted the defeated as its leaders Group succeeded but 19 and 20 centurys imperialist countries that discriminated their colony were failed. Athens that   were reluctant in sharing its citizenship with outsider were perished but United State remains as a super power cause they rigorously accepted and opened its door to all colors. Considering this, we cannot expect future if we keep emphasizing and adhere to pure blood line and solitariness.

Im currently working at mechanical procurement Group and cause of its job characteristic we need to do physically difficult works sometimes and have to have knowledge about mechanical things. And when our group leader announced last year that he recruited a woman graduated as a new recruit, some complained and worried if she could adjust herself. But the result after 1 year have passed? She carry out her job without any problem up until now. We also have to spend and work with foreigner many times cause of business issue and at the first time we worried if my counter partners can go ahead with me smoothly but as time goes by, we are surprised to understand that we have many things in common. To find out if he thinks or acts differently and understand it is important thing but the more important one is to find out which value we can share together and if there is anything in common. We surely can expect to achieve something faster and efficiently from the group that has its members from similar background and have a similar culture. But with the same reason, if the members have same target and have varieties of resources, they can create more distinctive outcome.

In 1970 and 1980, we had a relatively small economy so we could produce the product we like by ourselves to our market and could expect benefit out of there. But the situation changed now. Most of business models cannot make profit if they are limited in domestic market. It surely is important to develop and make so called mega hit model which can be sold at any place of the world but along with this, we also have to develop ourselves to be enable to develop customized products for specific market. To achieve this, we have to understand varieties of customer from different background so that we can find out what they want faster and correctly. Women can find out what women wants more effectively and Islam knows what Islam wants better. American employee knows what American customers wants better and Congolese employee understand Congolese customer better.

After all, my conclusion are like below.

Conclusion

-. Taking an exclusive attitude toward persons who have different background can only lose your competitiveness.
-. Try to find out if there is a value you can share together.
